Summary (4x01 "Lazurus Rising" coda): Dean is back, though it doesn't seem real quite yet.
Author's Notes: Drabble Meme offering for deadbeat_nymph, who wanted Sam/Dean on the first night after Dean came back from Hell. This is more how I wish things had been than how I now suspect they were.
Also for supernatural100, this is "Thankful."

"I still can't believe—"

"I know." Dean exhales slowly. The air moving inside him is suddenly so strange. "Me either."

"Are you all right?"

Images of anguish, terror—torment—fill Dean's head, everything he saw and did in Hell coming back to haunt him. "I'm fine," he forces out roughly, swallowing the truth Sam can never know.

"I missed you." Sam steps in and pulls Dean close, his kisses soft at first, then desperate, needy.

"Sam," Dean whispers, the name—the thought—something he can finally have again. He touches Sam like he might disappear…

God, it's been forever.

I don't think he had time after long to string thoughts together in Hell-- I think it was all one long mental scream after that. :(

But now, he can turn once again to what he loves instead of being stuck on all that he fears. What an immense, overwhelming relief that must be.

The hug WAS awesome, but Sam seemed... underwhelmed to have Dean back, and for Dean, my longer story, The Barest Whisper Of A Bone-Dry Soul (http://halfshellvenus.livejournal.com/325423.html), describes where my thinking is on S4 these days.

I'd rather it was more like this, but sadly I don't think so!

Have you thought about finishing the Big Bang fic anyway and posting it late at your own journal? Or doing the story, but without the length requirement?

The Big Bangs come out and everyone gets overwhelmed with reading for awhile, and then... there's this nice void about a month later. ;)

Oh, definitely! I haven't gotten much done on it since the day after the deadline, but it's been circumstantial, and I plan to get back on track today. (I had a bit of week, if you know what I mean. Let's just say the good day included having Marthapants shaved on his first ever non-alley-cat excursion into the world.)

Anyway, my hope is to post it before the big bangs come out, sort of like a warm up. Does that make sense? In any case, I'm definitely going to finish it, and soon, barring death or serious illness. (Man, I hope that I didn't just jinx myself.)
