Title: Stone Secrets
Original Fiction
Rating: G
Summary: The granting of wishes is uncertain magic.
Author's Notes: For the [community profile] writerverse challenge prompt of "Have You Ever Been to _____?"

x-x-x-x-x

At the part of the river where the water grows silent, there are no ripples, no wavelets, no murmurs. The shadows are deep, the banks damp and mossy, and the air smells like the promise of rain.

People from the farms and villages nearby go to that place to make wishes.

Thursday noon is the best time to go, the stories say. We walk in sideways, pockets full of witch-weed and our hair tied in knots. Anyone who slips into that place unnoticed is more likely to have a wish granted.

Our secrets are sacred, and wishes are the most secret things of all. We whisper them into the veins of wilted leaves, wrapping them around pebbles and setting them on the water. Most will float, impossible as that seems. Only the wishes that slip beneath the surface ever come true.

We know better than to ask for small things, or to waste our wishes on sweetmeats and baubles. We plead for fevers to break, or that wasting sicknesses be healed. When our wish-stones do not sink, we return and ask again, for No does not mean Never.

I have been to that place each week since Michaelmas, and still my mother will not wake.

Soon, I shall go daily, repeating the ritual as often as I must to get it right. I bring my own stones, stones that are larger and heavier each week. None match the weight that lies on my heart.

This is foolishness, Annika, you will think, for surely I have come too often to be able to creep up on the magic in that place without it knowing?

That may be, certainly, but I have no other hopes or methods to turn to. I grew desperate many weeks ago, so terribly desperate.

Now, I have nothing to lose.

x-x-x-x-x

Spirited away from their beds each night, they slipped through the secret door and down the stairs into the world below.

Whose summons they heeded did not matter, and the lack of wanting changed nothing. Night after night, the princesses made the journey underground, traveling through strange forests and across a river to dance with princes from some unknown other kingdom.

Each day, they were wearier than the last.

Why it began and whether it would end, they did not know. Perhaps some knight or wizard might find them and set things right.

Perhaps that had already happened, and this was the result:

Not the mercy so desperately wished for, but a punishment in the guise of gaiety.

"About 20 minutes into the ass end of Nowhere from the last time you asked that question."

"What?"

"Nothing…"

"Hey, Mike, do you know what's funny?"

"Yes. Do you?"

"Huh?"

"Dude, ever since we left Roswell, you've been yammering at me like your 'off' button's broken. We've been driving for hours, and there are no signs of civilization anywhere. So, I'm not in the mood for jokes or questions. I just want to see Albuquerque again, is that too much to ask?"

"Heh. Maybe."

"Jesus, Jeremy, what's that supposed to mean?"

"It means, I think we've passed that cactus before. And those yellow flowers awhile back."

"Are you serious? How is that even possible? We're on a highway, and we haven't made any turns."

"They'll be come back again, you'll see. Just wait."

"And that's what you thought was funny?''

"No."

"Jeremy."

"The way you keep calling me 'Jeremy' is probably the funniest part of all."

"What? Why would you say that?"

Title: Gone
Fandom: Original Fiction
Rating: PG
Summary: They never talked about him
Author's Notes: For the [community profile] writerverse prompt of "Middle Sibling."

x-x-x-x-x

My mother was the youngest in her family—though never the baby, she always insisted. There was no place for "babies" in the house where she grew up. Daniel was the oldest, strong and handsome and able to do nearly anything, or so she said. After Daniel came Peter, but they never talked about him. Mother only knew what Daniel told her, whispered moments years later when no one else could hear.

Are you allowed to miss someone you chose to betray?

It was winter in an already hopeless year when the man came to their door. He was dressed in gray, the color of the sky and of the fields that had lain barren for two full seasons. Grandmother could not offer him meat, for the herd had been sold off bit by bit to keep the family fed. She could not offer him milk, for the cow had run dry before New Year's Day.

The man needed neither food nor drink, he assured her. What he sought instead was a young person to assist him in his home and in his work—someone old enough to be taught and young enough to last. In return, he could offer her payment and the promise of prosperity once more.

My mother was a babe in the cradle, too little to be of use to anyone. The man might have been thinking of Daniel, but Grandmother persuaded him to take Peter instead.

They never saw either of them again.

The winter turned warm that year, rains softening the earth and preparing it for spring. The soil grew fertile, bringing forth the richest crops Grandmother had ever seen. She gathered in a harvest that paid enough to buy food for the next two years, and each year after the promise held until her children were grown and gone and Grandmother herself was finally dead.

She must have missed her son, whose fate she handed over so willingly in the weak light of a cold February afternoon.

But she never said anything about the child who was blood-price for their future, and her children never saw her weep or worry over whatever that poor boy's story might have become.

Title: The Wanderer
Fandom: Original Fiction

Summary: They say the Wanderer was handsome once.
Author's Notes: For the [community profile] writerverse "Campfire Tales" challenge. Happy Halloween!

x-x-x-x-x

They say the Wanderer was handsome once, those who remember when the poor man had a face.

The manner of handsome is lost now, four decades gone with nothing left but the kinds of stories whispered in the dark. "One Halloween night…" they begin, or "On the first full moon after his true love died…" The tales vary, but they all concur in how things ended. Besieged by grief and despair, the Wanderer clawed his skin until he was more beast than man and even his mother would scarcely have known him.

His shadow hides between the trees of the forest, and slips through the fog on the moors. His voice rides on the wind, distant and misheard and then suddenly soft and close and terrible, there behind you. Misery and woe will follow, should he ever speak your name.

Whatever could he want? the foolish few are sure to ask. He is ash and earth now, dead and buried. Nothing shall ever change that.

Travelers often carry torches, even in daylight, hoping to keep the Wanderer at bay. Still, he hunts and roams, in search of something to make him whole.

Those unlucky enough to meet his barren-bone gaze soon discover all too horribly what it is he seeks.

Title: The Road
Fandom: Original Fiction
Rating: PG
Summary: I think this is where I got on…
Author's Notes: For the [community profile] writerverse prompt of "Exit."

x-x-x-x-x

I think this is where I got on, just after that dark, twisted tree. Funny that I can't seem to get out the same way now—you'd think that would work, but it's like walking on a treadmill. Going faster or slower makes no difference, I still don't get anywhere.

I don't even know how I got here in the first place.

I've wandered down the road, looking for other ways out. There are barren hills and fallow fields, but no paths off to the side. The only noises I hear are the crunch of my feet and the tightness of my breathing. There are no birds or animals, and no breeze, just the faint odor of smoke.

Why can't I leave?

The road just moves with me if I try to walk away from it, and even the slightest glimpse of a break in the terrain becomes nothing more than a mirage. I've been out here for a long time, maybe days, maybe more. I'm pretty sure I haven't always been here, though it's getting harder and harder to remember.

My feet keep moving, sleepwalking their way onward. As I crest a hill, I see ruined vegetation crowding the edges of the road, almost too close to pass. Something about it is unsettling.

I tiptoe along, as nearly invisible as I can make myself be. One tree seems to reach for me, its blackened limbs like grasping fingers. I hold my breath and slip past, leaning away until I'm safely beyond it. It seems familiar, that tree, and the trick of movement feels like something I've done before, but when?

I think this is where I got on…

Title: The Flip Side Of Chaos

Characters: Matt, John (Gen or Pre-Slash)
Rating: PG
Summary: Matt has had a hell of a couple of days.
Author's Notes: For the [community profile] writerverse prompt of "random."

x-x-x-x-x

He'd taken a spec-job as a white-hat hacker—it was an opportunity and a challenge. The payoff was winner-takes-all, but Matt was actually that good, so why not? He'd been on the verge of breaking through the last step and claiming victory when he'd had to stop because someone was pounding on the door.

That someone was a beefy cop who'd come looking for Matt for no particularly good reason. That was just about the point when the world exploded, an event Matt honestly had not seen coming at all.

It turned out the cop was one of the good guys—as unbelievable as it was to have both of those ideas exist in the same context. Warlock would have said Matt was the victim of some kind of secret brain implant, except that Warlock had wound up helping them, so that had to prove something.

Maybe it proved Matt had finally had one too many caffeine-fueled all-night coding extravaganzas, and he was actually passed-out on the living room floor,

It didn't feel like that, though. What it felt like was a bullet hole in the knee—a knee that was now the size of a cantaloupe—and the aftermath of a couple of days of being chased and shot at while driving across multiple states in an impossibly convoluted attempt to save the world.

An attempt that had actually worked.

So, in the current version of what seemed to be Matt's new reality, he was lying in a hospital bed waiting for the pain meds to kick in and wondering where the hell he was going to go when the hospital discharged him. His apartment was probably nothing but cinders, and moving back into his parents' place had homicidal implications written all over it. There were aspects of being a hero that definitely sucked.

Matt flipped through TV channels on the remote, bored and restless and thinking that some good news would be nice for a change. He heard a scuffling sound.

"Hey, kid." John McClane came around the corner, his shoulder bandaged and a nurse at his heels who was scolding him to get back in bed.

"Hey," Matt grinned. Of course McClane would be up and running around like he'd barely gotten scratched. The guy probably ate bullets for breakfast.

"I was thinking that you're probably going to need a place to stay when you get out of here. I've got a spare room in my apartment that's there for the taking, if you want."

"That… that'd be great," Matt said. He didn't know whether it was the offer or the morphine, but suddenly his worries just seemed to melt away.

"Terrific," McClane said. "Here's the address. I'm heading there now, but I'll come back and visit if they don't let you out by tomorrow."

"Sure thing," Matt said. "Thanks."

McClane nodded. "Don't mention it."

Matt watched him go, as the nurse followed behind and tried to persuade McClane to at least stay at the hospital overnight.

The apartment was gone—and everything in it—and life was kind of a mess right now. Still, in spite of everything, Matt felt pretty good.

He'd helped John McClane save the world today. After that, everything else seemed easy.

Russ had always hated the yearly fundraising carnival. The stupid games and screaming kids were bad enough, but working a booth made him feel like some kind of circus attraction. Police officers needed the community's respect to do their jobs well, and putting on a clown costume or running the ring-toss game did not exactly further that.

What it did was help the budget. A department that couldn't pay for a decent supply of batteries needed all the help it could get. That mean Russ and all the other off-duty members of the Battle Creek PD had to show up at the downtown park once a year and humiliate themselves for money.

At least this year, he wasn't working the dunk tank.

Russ scowled into his coffee cup. "God, not that again."

Boyd Crowder smiled like he knew a little too much, and the problem, Raylan thought, was that he probably did.

It was why Raylan hated coming home to Harlan.

He had chased criminals from one state to the next, but the challenge was minor compared to what Raylan was used to. Harlan bred its own kind of cunning, the casual wiles and misdirection of moonshine kingdoms and hillbilly racketeering. Boyd had learned its tainted craft at the cradle, though he'd tried once or twice to refuse it. Raylan had broken so far away from it all that he'd landed on the other side, and now he and Boyd were at odds more often than not. It was a battle the two of them might never finish.

Boyd turned up far too often during Raylan's local investigations, and might just as easily lie to him as find some reason to help. Half the time, Raylan wanted to punch that grin off Boyd's face, but then Boyd would say his name with that honey-butter ease that seemed to steal all sense from Raylan's head. The way Boyd said his name felt more like home than anything Raylan knew.

In those moments, Raylan thought Boyd really did know too much, or that at least he knew something Raylan hadn't yet found the words to explain.

All the vows he'd ever made about Harlan and Boyd Crowder never seemed to account for the fact that Raylan still hadn't found a way to leave.

Neal spread Brie on a sesame cracker. "You could always be Toto."

Mozzie scowled. "That sounds suspiciously like a stereotypical assignment related to my height."

'All right, then," Neal said, relaxing back against the couch. "Who do you think you'd be?"

"The Wizard, of course," Mozzie said grandly.

"The con man with a soft spot for people in need… Wait." Neal sat up straight. "I want to be the Wizard."

"Too late."

Neal reached for the grapes. "Who, then?"

"Well, there aren't any kings or princes, but you could always be Dorothy. She's the star."

"Right," Neal said. "The wide-eyed, clueless character who's more brainless than the Scarecrow."

Mozzie shrugged. "How about the Tin Man?"

Neal laughed. "That's Peter. Serious, upstanding, good-hearted, and always the grownup. Elizabeth, though…"

"Mrs. Suit is definitely Glinda. Beautiful and kind, and she'd stand up to the Wicked Witch no matter what it took."

Wow, Neal thought. That was kind of telling. "I'd actually been thinking of June as Glinda. I can't imagine who else she'd be."

Mozzie shook his head. "No doubling up."

"These character archetypes are terrible. We need a different source. Maybe Peter Pan?"

"Peter Pan is obviously you."

"Or maybe not," Neal sighed. "Let's just watch the movie."

Mozzie looked over at him. "I believe Toto's still available…"

Neal turned up the volume on the television. "Not a chance, Moz. Not a chance."
