Tales From The City
idol survivor | daily-fic challenge, day 8 | 6x100 words

x-x-x-x-x

I.
The delivery truck was late again, as if Sal didn't have a million things to do today. The store opened in an hour—he'd have to rush to get the produce on the shelves, and he was shorthanded already.

His son Joey usually refreshed the produce display, but Joey was late, too. They'd fought at dinner the night before, and Joey had stormed out and gone who knew where? God, Sal's ulcer was pulsating like a disco….

Joey's mother had died eight years ago. Sal knew he said stupid things sometimes, but he loved his son.

Why wasn't Joey back?

II.
Ali was careful through the turns—bicycling in traffic was not for the faint of heart. He'd been car-doored just last week, and lost his cargo to the streets. No broken bones, though, and minor damage to his bike. He'd been lucky.

His current parcel was due by three. He didn't know what was in it. His policy was no drugs, nothing illegal, nothing dangerous. But it was heavy. It made balancing harder on the turns.

Cab ahead, bus behind, keep peddling. His family needed the money back home, whether it was bowling balls or dumbbell weights that fed them.

III.
With a fine, smooth tenor and moves like James Brown, Earl Williams had once hoped to make it big in music.

Driving the Number 47 bus wasn't the same as Motown, but you couldn't feed your children on dreams. He knew he'd made the right choice.

Every week, he sang with a couple of friends who played guitar and drums, and it helped. He didn't know whether Lavelle thought it was foolish, but he loved her enough not to ask. She'd never tell him if she did.

She was one of a kind, the best luck Earl would ever have.

IV.
The daily commute was hell, but it beat driving. Emma stepped into the building and rode the elevator to the fourth floor, where briefs and depositions waited to consume her day.

Mom didn't look good last night. She needs live-in help. But where to find it? Everyone wanted aides who were kind and honest and capable. How many of those could there possibly be?

Emma shuddered to think of the research and interviews ahead, the risk of hiring someone who wasn't what they seemed.

At least it isn't a nursing home. Not yet.

Because that transition would be absolutely brutal.

V.
That T-beam looked crooked, Harry thought. "Fix it!" he yelled, "Inspector's comin' by today!"

Harry glared at his clipboard. Way too much to do, the project was two weeks behind.

Most of the guys were good workers, but you couldn't beat bad luck. Supplier orders the wrong gauge of pipe—Bam! Three days to get the right one delivered. Coupla guys get stomach flu, pass it around—Boom! Two days gone right there.

Today, they were taking out a utility slab, 'sposed to be four feet over.

Christ. Damn jackhammer jolts were reverberatin' right through the arthritis in Harry's spine…

VI.
Enrique hated this job. The tips were good, but the customers... "Where's my risotto?" and "Tell the chef al dente. Do I need to spell it?"

The job was supposed to be temporary, but he and Victor needed the money for a bigger apartment. Something with an actual bedroom and a closet, instead of a studio with a clothes rack and a kitchen smaller than the handicapped stall in the restaurant's bathroom.

He'd met Victor two years ago at a Carnaval de Ponce celebration. Their apartment was trash, but Victor was amazing.

For Victor, even asshole customers were worth it.

The Lamp
idol survivor | daily-fic challenge, day five | 5x100 words

~ * ~ * ~ * ~

I.
Ahmed wished for a virgin bride, a beauty with skin like milk and long, silken hair the color of darkest night.

Then she arrived. She was exquisite, certainly, but no younger than forty—too old to give him the heirs he required.

His second wish, a palace, had poor defenses. It was overtaken by marauders in a few days' time. Its treasury and servants (his third wish) were lost in the same fight, and Ahmed was lucky to escape alive.

The gold coins he had saved proved useful then: he repurchased his perfume stall, and returned to his former life.

II.
Ali was a beggar in the Old Market who discovered the lamp behind a carpet merchant's stall. Three wishes were offered, and he leaped at the chance to use them: a thousand camels, a warm new suit, and a feast for a king.

The results were unexpected.

Most of the camels wandered off the first day, for Ali had nowhere to keep them. And while the feast was grand, the desert heat spoiled most of it by morning.

But Ali remained undaunted. The suit was perfect.

He wore it to search for work, winning a position that changed his fate.

III.
Yasmin was a scholar who dreamed of knowledge, for there was no limit to the things she wished to know.

But the genie gave her the power to see the future, the most dangerous knowledge of all. She was persecuted, and forced to flee.

She wished for safety, then, and found herself transported to a land far away. After her last wish—financial ease over the course of a long, happy life—she sold the lamp and began the business of learning French, working as a seamstress, and embracing the opportunity to be more than she ever could have before.

IV.
Overlooked and long unloved, Henri was a singer who thought he deserved better. The lamp lured him from a junk shop with promises of granting all his heart desired.

Henri wished for fame, for love, and for the greatest of voices, for there was nothing measured or modest in anything he did.

He sang magnificently then, in a strong, high tenor so beautiful that audiences wept. He was given leading roles at L'Opera Dramatique, and won the heart of its finest soprano, Sophie Broutin.

Henri's name lived on in infamy after the scandal in which Sophie's husband killed them both.

V.
Trapped in his dark prison, Z'alharzin cursed the man who had bested him centuries ago. A seeming simpleton, the man had challenged him with a riddle, the price for losing anything the winner named.

Enslaved to the lamp, granting the wishes of fools, Z'alharzin fumed at the insect who had called him too dangerous to roam the world freely. Who was anyone to judge him? He refused to be bound by their chains!

Thus, he twisted those wishes, enjoying the unplanned Fates they inflicted.

At times, he showed mercy, but rarely.

Z'alharzin was a Djinn.

He could never be tamed.

Possum Ran Over My Grave

In the eternal shade at the base of an old oak, something runs across the dead leaves and dirt that cover the sins of the past.

There are secrets in that earth, a legacy of betrayal and truth still hard as bone. That story remains untold. Dreams are buried there, too, the dreamer silenced more than five years ago.

All the secrets have the same name.

Margaret Willows is not missing—she never left. But all these years later, only Benjamin Shale knows she is here at the foot of this oak tree where he hid her so long ago.

Jantelagen*

"He is a good match," her mother said. "A girl your age should be thinking of marriage and starting a family. You could do worse."

Margaret wasn't certain she wanted those things, at least not yet. She longed to become a nurse, and that would take money and years of training. Couldn't finding a husband wait?

"We cannot provide for you forever. No other man has come courting, and there are girls far prettier and less headstrong."

You are difficult, Margaret heard, and knew it to be true.

"Very well," she said.

"I shall give him leave to pursue me."

Kummerspeck**

He was handsome enough, everyone said. They meant, For you.

Margaret knew what was expected.

Wearing her prettiest dresses and brightest smiles, she endeavored to be pleasing. She listened attentively to his every word, and kept the conversation afloat when he grew awkward.

At times, he seemed angry and unhappy. He drank when those black moods came upon him, chasing tumbler after tumbler of whiskey toward the bottom of the bottle.

Could this really be the best choice? When he asked her to marry him, she knew the correct answer was, Yes.

So why did she regret having said it?

Sang-froid***

It was a mistake—a terrible mistake—but it could not be undone. Nothing left but to make the best of it and continue on.

He hadn't meant… or not quite so hard, but he'd been so angry when he saw her slipping through town with a bag packed for the city instead of marrying him as she'd promised to do.

The earth beneath his spade was harder than Benjamin's heart as he dug the hole deep in the woods where he would lay Margaret to rest.

When he finished, he would leave Abbotsville forever, taking the truth with him.

I'll add as I go (lots of distractions, so I'm moving slowly)

And Yet... ("Kindling," for [personal profile] ecosopher

The silence gets to you. No insects, birds, or animals. The only sounds left are yours and the wind's, apart from the occasional voice.

Other people are dangerous. Predatory. You learned to hide when you hear them, and you don't talk to yourself anymore.

You never know who might be listening.

Not everything is dead or gone, but so much is beyond hope. You gather firewood anyway, warmth and day-to-day survival something you can't abandon even if you don't know why.

You build fires only at night. Winter will change everything, but for now…

Now, you're just grasping for tomorrow.

The Two-Step ("Wily," for [profile] xo_kizzy_xo)

She was a dame with killer gams and I was her mark, down at the juke joint on the lower east side.

"Hey, big boy," she said, like I was somethin' special and not the lunkhead she was trying to snare. She poured out her troubles and I listened, Mr. Nice Guy. She needed money—money to quit this town and her cheatin' ex, and she knew where to find it.

She batted those baby-blues like her rescue was a done deal.

"Sorry, toots," I said, and almost meant it.

But she wasn't worth losing my badge.

They never are.

Rating: PG
Summary: It's paradise, all right, but you can't get there by car.
Author's Notes: For [personal profile] celtic_forest, who wanted Sam and Dean in Hawaii.

x-x-x-x-x

Dragging Dean off the airplane and into a rental car wasn't the ideal start to a vacation, but whatever worked. Including sedatives.

Thirty miles out of Honolulu, Dean suddenly came fully awake. "This is gorgeous!"

"That's why people come here," Sam said.

"I know, but it's unreal. Wait—it's not real, is it? I'm dreaming."

"Christ, Dean, I spent half a day wrangling you here. No dream's worth that."

"Okay, okay… Can we stop and walk in the ocean, then?

"Sure."

Dean stood in the sand, waves spilling over his toes. "This is a vacation, Sammy."

Yep. All for you…

Characters: S4 Walter (Gen, Drabble)
Rating: G
Summary (Season 4 pre-series): Tragedy lies in the space between science and magic.
Author's Notes: For the [community profile] writerverse prompt of "Test Tube."

x-x-x-x-x

Walter was once considered dangerous. He could shift time, invent his own physics, even alter the boundaries of reality. One sleepless night too many might result in transforming the known universe (and who was to say that it hadn't already happened?)

But when Walter's son died (a helpless little boy like any other), part of Walter died, too. His insane ambitions were tethered by the knowledge that all of his science couldn't save his son. Peter was gone, despite a father who should have been able to bend the stars.

Walter had failed.

There were no dreams left to chase.

Summary (S3 finale): It was the most desperate choice of all.
Author's Notes: For [community profile] writerverse, and the prompt of "It Had To Be Done."

x-x-x-x-x

Of all the words that could have admitted the truth of Peter's sacrifice, the hardest was Goodbye.

There was hope, Walter thought, that Peter might survive—that they all might continue forward in isolated parallels of the universes now bleeding together so freely and nearly cancelling each other out. But God, the risk: losing Peter to save both worlds was an equation any scientist could measure and an agony no father could forget.

Peter chose, instead. He was so brave, so certain.

He put humanity first. Walter would have destroyed it again in a heartbeat, just to bring Peter back.

Author's Notes: For Day 4 of the 8 Days challenge at [community profile] samdean_otp, and for the [community profile] writerverse prompt of "Angst."

x-x-x-x-x

It had to be a trick, just another cruel game in a series Dean had played since his time in Hell began.

But his skin still burned from the angel's touch, and the smell of earth was stronger than the brimstone memories of before. Maybe this reprieve was real.

Where was Sam, and how would Dean ever find him?

He'd look forever, if he had to. Finding Sam would prove this wasn't just some tantalizing reminder of everything he'd sacrificed.

For Sammy, I'd do it all again, Dean thought.

Sam's death was still the worst Hell Dean had ever known.

How can you not follow?

Past the next dune, or the hollowed-out memory of a rock, you might find the place where peace lies waiting for you to claim it. In the realm of barren mysteries, still seeking life's hidden truth, you wander on until you become the wind, an illusion, a moment in time…

You fade into the sun.

Travis
"You'd be breaking your lease," Travis said. "The fine for that is huge. It'll cost you."

"I don’t care!" Ben Harkness was almost nearly stuttering. "I'm not staying in that apartment another day!"

Travis sighed and pulled Ben's rental agreement out of the file cabinet. He'd have to clean the apartment and put an ad in the newspaper, then do the background checks and interviews for prospective tenants. He'd been through this for 1436 just two months ago, and it wore him out.

They might as well just close the whole top floor. Nobody stayed in those apartments for long.

Nina
It was cold again. Nights were the worst—the chill grew stronger with each passing hour until it went right to the bone. But it was four o'clock in the afternoon now, and even the storm clouds outside couldn't account for the bitter sting in the air.

Author's Notes: A [community profile] writerverse entry for the prompt, "There are ghosts by the reservoir."

x-x-x-x-x

Mist—or something more—rose from the reservoir. There were ghosts nearby, and whether or not anyone could see them made no difference to their victims.

Sam had a headful of notes, and Dean had a shotgun full of rock salt. The moon was full.

"There!" Sam said, and Dean blasted the swarm of vapor heading their way.

"You were supposed to threaten it, Dean, so it would lead us to its grave!"

"Eh." Dean loaded another round. "It'll be back."

Dean was in no hurry. He had Sam again, and he'd be happy to do this all night long.

Author's Notes: A [community profile] writerverse entry for the prompt of "Just Before The Battle."

x-x-x-x-x

Dean knew about the letter from Stanford, but it was an offer, not a decision. For a while, he could cling to a thin sliver of hope.

But then Sam said it, the words aimed like an attack at eighteen years of Winchester tradition: "I'm going away to college."

The air nearly crackled with static as their father's face darkened with anger. Then shouting exploded through the kitchen, the inevitable lead-up to bitter words too damaging to take back.

Dean stood frozen and silent, lost to the buzzing in his head that signaled the utter destruction of everything he loved.

x-x-x-x-x

People believe there is no beauty in destruction, but they are wrong.

There is nothing purer than the damned crying "Mercy!" against the roaring onslaught of fire, nothing freer than the billowing cloud of dust rising from the collapse of an exploded building.

Riches and artistry are untrustworthy. They distract us from the truth of what life really is.

The liberation of humanity from its unchecked misery may be misunderstood, but those severed souls are then free to fly away.

One day, we too will soar as they do. But until then, we are the agency of their glorious release.

Landen waits on the threshold of the doorway and questions the truth of what he sees.

Star-studded darkness stretches out before him, yawning sky where his own side holds the grassy hilltop on which he stands.

No one has ever (surely not, wouldn't he know?) crossed over, or maybe they simply never came back.

The fall might kill him, if that sky is real, if the image is true. Anyone else would have walked away by now, but not Landen.

He might be imagining this, but it is strange and beautiful, and the possibilities pull him more strongly than sense.
