I love this kind of challenge: telling the truth of a story, but with just enough implication of something else that readers hopefully don't see the end coming. But once the ending has arrived, they can look back and see that that the story never actually denied that ending.
It's probably one of the reasons I loved "Sixth Sense" so much. :D
