That would be an awful thought! But more the possibility of it, because he actually doesn't know that's happening. He's aware that Jamal seems to be greeting him every morning (because Jamal brings him back online), but not that he was ever "gone" in between. Hence the no hobbies, obviously, not because Steven isn't trying hard enough. ;)
I always enjoy the details you notice in stories, and you've hit on one of my favorite sci-fi themes. It's one of the reasons I love the Bladerunner movies so much-- and the Robopocalpyse series of books!
