Hahahaha! I'm glad the twist there wasn't obvious, and that I'm guessing you could tell that his interactions were truly awkward in the way of a socially inept person, so his coworkers' uneasiness with him wasn't surprising.
And totally understandable once you find out WHY they don't expect him to talk to them. His imagining that he doesn't talk to them 'often' (when the reality is, basically never) is like his imagining that he probably enjoyed cake at one time, but just can't remember when (also actually never).
For his smoothie, the hidden understory is that machine oil is one of its main ingredients, and the color is on the greenish-black scale. :O
I'm glad you could relate to him-- this is exactly the kind of dawning awareness that would be the path outward for a person in Steven's situation (much like your entry this week!), but in his case is a programming malfunction. It's like his A.I. has started to extrapolate from his environment and make new assumptions about how his life should be, when in fact... he's much more different from his coworkers than he realizes. ;)
