Hahaha-- You should celebrate your detecting and critical reading skills there, because you were right!
It's always a balancing act, writing anthropomorphic characters so that they have enough hints of their identity that the reader doesn't get to the end and think, "Lies! These were totally random characters, they could have been anyone!" or, OTOH, find them too obvious. :D
