The LJ Idol competitions are a wonderful place to meet other writers who do original fiction and original non-fiction, so it's a great opportunity to try a different kind of writing. Plus, you can join without competing, so you could get a feel for what goes on there and see if you'd like to try participating as a writer? If that would interest you?
That's how I got into original fiction. I wrote only fanfiction for years, but joined as a means of trying to stretch myself. It's been great!
Are you thinking 'in time' means after your dissertation is finished? That is a daunting piece of work, but you're making real progress on it. :)
